In the Forêt d'Eperlecques, 12km north of St-Omer (several trains daily from Calais to Watten station, on the eastern edge of the forest, about 4km from the site), you can visit the largest ever Blockhaus, or concrete bunker, built in 194344 by the Germans or rather 6000 half-starved slave labourers (daily: March 2.156pm; April & Oct 10amnoon & 2.156pm; MaySept 10am7pm; Nov 2.155pm; tel 03.21.88.44.22; €6.50). It was designed to launch V2 rockets against London, but fortunately the RAF and French Resistance prevented it ever being ready for use by bombing it during construction.
