The gare SNCF (tel 02.98.98.31.26) and gare routière (tel 02.98.90.88.89) are next to each other on avenue de la Gare, 1km east of the town centre. Local buses #1 and #6 connect with both, but all pass through place de la Résistance near the tourist office. If you want to use public transport to get to the coast anywhere nearby, the bus is your only option. The most useful local operator is the Compagnie Amoricaine de Transport or CAT, 10 rue Jules Verne; (tel 02.98.95.02.36), which runs services to Bénodet, leaving from the gare routière or place de la Résistance; to Audierne and Pointe du Raz, from the gare routière or place de Locronan; and to Concarneau and Quimperlé from the gare routière.Between June and September you can sail from Quimper down the Odet to Bénodet, which takes about 1hr 15min, on Vedettes de l'Odet (Bénodet tel 02.98.57.00.58, Quimper tel 02.98.52.98.41, www.vedettes-odet.com; €19.50 return, under-13s €12). Between one and three boats sail each day, with both the schedules and the departure point varying according to the tide; check with the tourist office (which also sells tickets). Quimper's tourist office is housed in a small single-storey building on the south bank of the Odet at 7 rue de la Déesse, place de la Résistance (mid-March to mid-June Mon–Sat 9.30am–12.30pm & 1.30–6.30pm; last two weeks in June & first two weeks of Sept Mon–Sat 9.30am–12.30pm & 1.30–6.30pm, Sun 10am–1pm; July & Aug Mon–Sat 9am–7pm, Sun 10am–12.45pm & 3–5.45pm; Oct to mid-March Mon–Sat 9.30am–12.30pm & 1.30–6pm; tel 02.98.53.04.05). There are remarkably few hotels in the old streets in the centre of Quimper, though several can be found near the station. There's a four-star campsite, Orangerie de Lannion, 4km out of the centre on the route de Bénodet (tel 02.98.90.62.02; www.lanniron.com; closed mid-Sept to mid-May).
