There's a huge array of rail passes available, covering various regions of Europe as well as individual countries. Some have to be bought before leaving home while some can only be bought on the spot. SNCF also offers its own passes, most of which can be bought in advance either direct or through Rail Europe, the umbrella company for all national and international rail purchases. Its comprehensive website (www.raileurope.com) is the most useful source of information on which rail passes are available, and also gives all current prices.
