France for visitors

Mopeds and scooters are relatively easy to find: everyone in France, from young kids to grandmas, rides one of them, and although they're not built for any kind of long-distance travel, they're ideal for shooting around town and nearby. Places that rent out bicycles often also rent out mopeds; you can expect to pay €30 a day for a 50cc machine. No licence is needed for bikes 50cc and under, but for anything larger you'll need a valid motorbike licence. Rental prices are around €55 for a 125cc bike; also expect to leave a hefty deposit by cash or credit card – over €1000 is not unusual – which you may lose in the event of damage or theft. Crash helmets are compulsory on all mopeds and motorbikes, and the headlight must be switched on at all times.
