Eating and drinking

There's ample scope in St-Jean for good-value eating, especially for seafood. The Buvette de la Halle (lunch only, closed Mon off season), on the corner of the market hall on boulevard Victor-Hugo, serves abundant meals of impeccably fresh crab, Oysters and sardines, plus pipérade, drink and dessert for around €20, while its sister restaurant La Bodega du Marché, at 18 rue Harispe (closed Mon & Tues), is an all-purpose place, offering plats du jour at lunchtime, tapas, beer and sometimes music at night.

Leading off place Louis-XIV – with its cafés, sidewalk artists and free summertime concerts in the bandstand (Tues–Sun 10pm) – rue de la République also has numerous restaurants, among them the cheap and cheerful La Ruelle (closed Mon), at no. 19, with seafood menus from €15, and L'Alcalde at no. 22, serving mixed platters and seafood specials €15–25. On the next street east, rue Tourasse, La Vieille Auberge at no. 22 (closed Tues lunch & Wed), offers a menu at €13.60, while Le Tourasse, at no. 25, is another classic for seafood and dessert (menus at €15–28; closed Mon).
