There's ample scope in St-Jean for good-value eating, especially for seafood. The Buvette de la Halle (lunch only, closed Mon off season), on the corner of the market hall on boulevard Victor-Hugo, serves abundant meals of impeccably fresh crab, Oysters and sardines, plus pipérade, drink and dessert for around €20, while its sister restaurant La Bodega du Marché, at 18 rue Harispe (closed Mon & Tues), is an all-purpose place, offering plats du jour at lunchtime, tapas, beer and sometimes music at night.Leading off place Louis-XIV with its cafés, sidewalk artists and free summertime concerts in the bandstand (TuesSun 10pm) rue de la République also has numerous restaurants, among them the cheap and cheerful La Ruelle (closed Mon), at no. 19, with seafood menus from €15, and L'Alcalde at no. 22, serving mixed platters and seafood specials €1525. On the next street east, rue Tourasse, La Vieille Auberge at no. 22 (closed Tues lunch & Wed), offers a menu at €13.60, while Le Tourasse, at no. 25, is another classic for seafood and dessert (menus at €1528; closed Mon).
