Barely 30km long, the Basque coast is easily accessible by air, bus and train, and reasonably priced hotel accommodation is not that difficult to find though space should be reserved a month in advance during summer. Bayonne, slightly inland, is the cultural focus and only town with some life apart from tourism. Biarritz, the most prestigious and varied resort, is flanked by magnificent beaches but can be a rather noisy place to stay in high season. Families will probably prefer St-Jean-de-Luz to the south an attractive and more manageable town in any case or Anglet just to the north, with more fine beaches which attract surfers from near and far. Pages in section ‘Côte Basque’: Biarritz, Bayonne, St-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye, Anglet.
