France for visitors

Gabas
France > Pyrénées > Central > Valleys of the Aspe and Ossau > Along the Ossau > Gabas

The road to GABAS, 13km away, winds steeply into the upper reaches of the Gave d'Ossau valley, south of Laruns. On days when there's no bus, you should get a lift without much difficulty from other walkers or employees of the Parc National des Pyrénées Occidentales, especially early in the morning. Primarily a base for climbers and walkers, there's nothing to it beyond a minuscule chapel, a Maison du Parc (mid-June to mid-Sept daily 10am–1pm & 2–7pm; tel 05.59.05.32.13), which has useful walking information, and a fair amount of accommodation. Of this, the best value is the CAF refuge (tel 05.59.05.33.14; closed part Jan, part Mar, May & Nov to late-Dec) at the top of the hamlet, and Hôtel Chez Vignau at the north entrance to town (tel 05.59.05.34.06, fax 05.59.05.46.12; closed 2 weeks in Nov; under €30). The latter also has the best restaurant locally, with delicacies such as frogs' legs and prune pie.
