Stretching from Bagnères-de-Luchon (or just Luchon) almost as far as Toulouse, the Comminges is an ancient feudal county that encompasses the upper valley of the River Garonne. It also boasts one of the finest buildings in the Pyrenees, the magnificent cathedral of St-Bertrand-de-Comminges, the product of three distinct periods of architecture. The mountainous southern part is what you will want to see, and access is via the unprepossessing little town of Montréjeau, from where there are daily bus and train services to Luchon. Pages in section ‘Comminges’: Valcabrère, St-Bertrand, Grottes de Gargas, Bagnères-de-Luchon.
