Baux-de-Provence
Within walking distance of Les Baux, along the D27 leading northwards, is the valley of quarried and eroded rocks named the Val d'Enfer – the Valley of Hell. One quarry has been turned into an audiovisual experience under the title of the Cathédrale des Images (mid-Feb to Dec daily 10am–7pm; €7), signposted to the right downhill from Les Baux's car park. The projection is continuous, so you don't have to wait to go in. You're surrounded by images projected all over the floor, ceilings and walls of these vast rectangular caverns, and by music that resonates strangely in the captured space. The content of the show, which changes yearly, doesn't really matter; it's an extraordinary sensation, wandering on and through the shapes and colours. As an erstwhile work site put to good use, it couldn't be bettered.
