Arrival, information and accommodation
France > Provence > Western > St-Remy > Information

There's no train station in St-Rémy; buses from Avignon, Aix and Arles drop you in place de la République, the main square abutting the old town on the east. The tourist office, on place Jean-Jaurès (June–Sept Mon–Sat 9am–noon & 2–7pm, Sun 9am–noon; Oct–May Mon–Sat 9am–noon & 2–6pm; tel 04.90.92.05.22, www.saintremy-de-provence.com), is just south of the centre, reached by following boulevard Marceau/avenue Durand-Maillane; they have excellent free guides to cycling and walking routes in and around the Alpilles and can provide addresses for renting horses. If you want to rent a bike, try Telecycles (tel 04.90.92.83.15). It's difficult to get to Glanum or Les Baux except by foot or taxi (taxis tel 06.07.02.25.64 or 06.09.31.50.38).

St-Rémy has a fairly wide choice of accommodation, though real bargains are hard to come by. In the old town, pleasant hotels with some cheap rooms are Les Arts-La Palette, above the Café des Arts at 30 bd Victor-Hugo (tel 04.90.92.08.50, fax 04.90.92.55.09; €30–40; closed Jan & Feb), and Ville Verte, on the corner of place de la République and avenue Fauconnet (tel 04.90.92.06.14, www.hotel-villeverte.com; €30–40), which has facilities for the disabled, a garden and a pool, and also organizes walking, climbing and cycling trips. Outside the old town, try Nostradamus, 3 av Taillandier (tel 04.90.92.13.23, fax 04.90.92.49.54; €30–40), to the north, with studios for two, or Le Castellet des Alpilles, 6 place Mireille (tel 04.90.92.07.21, www.castelet-alpilles.com; €55–70; closed mid-Jan to mid-Feb), to the south past the tourist office, which is small and friendly, and has some rooms with great views. Finally, close by the tourist office, the Antiques, 15 av Pasteur (tel 04.90.92.03.02, fax 04.90.92.50.40; €85–100; closed mid-Oct to March), is a nineteenth-century mansion with huge grounds, pools and wonderfully aristocratic furnishings in the dining room and salons.

There are three functional and busy campsites near St-Rémy: the municipal Le Mas de Nicolas, 2km along route de Mollèges (tel 04.90.92.27.05; €13; closed Nov to mid-March); Monplaisir, 1km along route de Maillane (tel 04.90.92.22.70, www.camping-monplaisir.fr; €11; closed Nov–Feb); and Pegomas, 1km along route de Noves (tel 04.90.92.01.21, fax 04.90.92.56.17; €12; closed Nov–Feb).
