The Abbaye de Silvacane
France > Provence > Western > Luberon > The Abbaye de Silvacane

If you're heading for Aix-en-Provence from Apt, you'll pass close to another ancient Cistercian abbey contemporary with Sénanque, 29km south of Apt, just across the Durance. After a long history of abandonment and evictions, the Abbaye de Silvacane (daily: April–Sept 9am–9pm; Oct–March 10am–1pm & 2–5pm; €5) is once again a monastic institution. Isolated from the surrounding villages on the bank of the Durance, its architecture has hardly changed over the last 700 years; you can visit the stark, pale-stoned splendour of the church, its cloisters and surrounding buildings.
