Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon
France > Provence > Western > Luberon > Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon

A large area of the Luberon has been designated the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon (www.parcs-naturels-regionaux.tm.fr/lesparcs), with the aim of conserving the natural fauna and flora and limiting development. The park is administered by the Maison du Parc, 60 place Jean-Jaurès in Apt (Mon–Sat 8.30am–noon & 1.30–6/7pm; tel 04.90.04.42.00), which is the place to go for information about every aspect of the Luberon. The centre also houses a small Musée de la Paléontologie (€1.50), which is specifically designed to amuse children and is fun. A submarine-type "time capsule" door leads down to push-button displays that include magnified views of insect fossils and their modern descendants.

Given the region's general dearth of public transport, the only practical and pleasurable way to explore the park is by Hiking or cycling. In Apt, bikes can be hired from Cycles Ricaud, 44 quai de la Liberté, Guy Agnel, 86 quai Général-Leclerc, or Cycles Peugeot, a few doors down.
