From Avignon's gare SNCF the half-hourly VilleneuveLes Angles #10 bus (take care not to go in the direction Les AnglesVilleneuve) runs direct to place Charles-David ("Bellevue" stop), taking less than ten minutes, or five if you catch it from Porte d'Oulle. After 7pm you'll have to take a taxi or walk; it's only 3km. On place Charles-David you'll find the tourist office (July daily 10am7pm; Aug daily 8.45am12.30pm & 26pm; SeptJune MonSat 8.45am12.30pm & 26pm; tel 04.90.25.61.33), and a food market on Thursday morning and bric-a-brac on Saturday morning. Avenue Gabriel-Péri leads west off the square past the mairie to place St-Marc. From here, the main street, rue de la République, runs due north.If money is no object, the first choice for accommodation has to be Le Prieuré, 7 place du Chapitre (tel 04.90.15.90.15; €125150), both for the rooms and for its restaurant. For half the price, you could stay in equally ancient surroundings at L'Atelier, 5 rue de la Foire (tel 04.90.25.01.84, [email protected]; €5570), a sixteenth-century house with huge open fireplaces and a walled garden, or at a Louis XIV mansion, Les Cèdres, 39 bd Pasteur (tel 04.90.25.43.92, [email protected]; €5570), with pool and restaurant. There is also the bed and breakfast, Jardin de la Livrée, 4bis rue Camp de Bataille (tel 04.90.26.05.05; €5570) with comfortable rooms and a good value restaurant. For a cheaper option, try the YMCA hostel, 7bis chemin de la Justice (tel 04.90.25.46.20, www.ymca-avignon.com; €4055), beautifully situated overlooking the river by Pont du Royaume, with balconied rooms for one to four people (€14 for dorm bed) and an open-air swimming pool (stop "Pont d'Avignon" on Les AnglesVilleneuve bus or "Général-Leclerc" on the Villeneuve-Les Angles bus). For campers, the three-star Camping Municipal de la Laune is in chemin St-Honoré (tel & fax 04.90.25.76.06; closed mid-Oct to March), off the D980, near the sports stadium and swimming pools.
