Feria

Arles has a good number of excellent-quality and cheap restaurants, and if you're looking for quick meals, or just want to watch the world go by, there's a wide choice of brasseries on the main boulevards. Place du Forum is the centre of café life; here you'll find Le Café La Nuit, immaculately recreated à la Van Gogh and open late, and the young and noisy Bistrot Arlésien.

Boitel 4 rue de la Liberté. A salon de thé with a whole pâtisserie full of goodies to go with the Earl Grey. Closed Sun afternoon.

L'Entrevue 23 quai Marx Dormoy tel 04.90.93.37.28. Hip Moroccan café with an attached hammam. Tajines for around €13; for the adventurous, a hammam/tajine combo at €17.

Le Galoubet 18 rue du Dr-Fanton tel 04.90.93.18.11. Pleasant, vine-covered terrace on which to taste the modern Provençal cuisine on a good-value €20 menu. Closed Sun and Mon lunch.

La Gueule du Loup 39 rue des Arènes tel 04.90.96.96.69. Cosy restaurant serving traditional dishes, with menus from €25. Closed Sun & Mon lunch.

Le Jardin du Manon 14 av des Alyscamps tel 04.90.93.38.68. Hospitable Provençal restaurant serving elaborate regional dishes and delicious desserts, which you can enjoy in a small patio garden. Menus from €17. Closed Wed.

Lou Marquès Hôtel Jules-César, bd des Lices tel 04.90.52.52.52. The top gourmet palace in the top grand hotel. The specialities, which include baudroie (monkfish), langoustine salad and Camargue rice cake, are all served with the utmost pomposity. Menus from €25.16. The other restaurant in the hotel, Le Cloître, has a lunch menu at around €18. Lou Marquès closed Sat evening, Le Cloître Mon lunch, both closed Nov & Dec.

La Paillote 28 rue Dr-Fanton tel 04.90.96.33.15. Very friendly place with a good €15 menu. Closed Thurs.

Toast Vin & Cie 2 rue Dr-Fanton tel 04.90.96.22.26. Hearty open sandwiches (€10) served with different salads. Lunch menu for €12. Closed Tues & Wed lunch.
