D'Arlatan 20 rue du Sauvage tel 04.90.93.56.55, www.hotel-arlatan.fr. This may not be Arles' most expensive hotel, but it is probably the most luxurious, set in a beautiful old fifteenth-century mansion and decorated with antiques. €85–100

Constantin 59 bd de Craponne, off bd Clemenceau tel 04.90.96.04.05, [email protected]. Pleasant, well-kept and comfortable hotel, with prices kept down by the proximity of the Nîmes highway (some traffic noise) and its location some distance from the centre. Closed Jan to mid-March. €40–55

Du Forum 10 place du Forum tel 04.90.93.48.95. Spacious rooms in an old house in the ancient heart of the city, with a swimming pool in the garden. A bit noisy but very welcoming. Closed Nov–March. €70–85

Gauguin 5 place Voltaire tel 04.90.96.14.35, fax 04.90.18.98.87. Comfortable, cheap and well run. Advisable to book. €30–40

Musée 11 rue du Grand-Prieuré tel 04.90.93.88.88, www.hoteldumusee.com.fr. Small, family-run place in a quiet location opposite Musée Réattu, offering slightly cramped but clean rooms. Closed Jan. €40–55

Terminus & Van Gogh 5 place Lamartine tel 04.90.96.12.32. A cheap option just outside one of the city gates, close to the train and bus stations. The Van Gogh theme is rather overplayed but at least it's colourful. Closed Dec & Jan. €30–40
