The street food markets provide one of the capital's more exacting tests of willpower. At the top end of the scale, there are the lavish arrays in rue de Lévis in the 17e and rue Cler in the 7e, both of which are more market street than street market, with their stalls mostly metamorphosed into permanent shops. The real street markets include a tempting scattering in the Left Bank – in rue de Buci (the most photographed), near St-Germain-des-Prés, rue Mouffetard, place Maubert and place Monge. Bigger ones are at Montparnasse, in boulevard Edgar-Quinet, and opposite Val-de-Grâce in boulevard Port-Royal. The largest is in rue de la Convention, in the 15e.For a different feel and more exotic foreign produce, take a look at the Mediterranean/Oriental displays in boulevard de Belleville and rue d'Aligre. Markets are traditionally morning affairs, usually starting between 7am and 8am and tailing off around 1pm. However, 2002 saw the opening of the city's first afternoon market, on place Baudoyer in the 4e; if it proves popular there are plans to open more.
