Clothes and flea markets
France > Paris > Shopping > Markets > Clothes and flea markets

Paris has three main flea markets (marchés aux puces) of ancient descent gathered about the old gates of the city. No longer the haunts of the flamboyant gypsies and petty crooks of literary tradition, they are nonetheless good entertainment, and if you go early enough you might just find something special. Some of the food markets have spawned secondhand clothes and junk stalls, notably the place d'Aligre, in the 12e, and the place des Fêtes, in the 20e.

Porte de Montreuil 20e. Cheap new clothes have begun to dominate what was the best of flea markets for secondhand clothes – still cheapest on Mon when leftovers from the weekend are sold off. Also old furniture, household goods and assorted junk. M° Porte-de-Montreuil. Sat, Sun & Mon 7.30am–5pm.

Porte de Vanves av Georges-Lafenestre/av Marc-Sangnier, 14e. The best choice for bric-a-brac little Parisian knick-knacks. Professionals deal alongside weekend amateurs. M° Porte-de-Vanves. Sat & Sun 7am–1.30pm.

St-Ouen/Porte de Clignancourt 18e. The biggest and most touristy flea market, with stalls selling new and secondhand clothes, shoes, records, books and junk of all sorts. The majority of the covered market, however, is now given over to expensive antiques. M° Porte-de-Clignancourt. Mon, Sat & Sun 7.30am–7pm.
