The rooms are decidedly cosy, with swathes of colourful fabrics adorning the bedheads, curtains and chairs. Excellent value. M° École-Militaire. €70–85

Hôtel Eiffel Rive-Gauche 6 rue du Gros-Caillou, 7^e tel 01.45.51.24.56, www.123france.com. A refurbishment has introduced rather cheap modern furnishings to this traditional two-star, but the wonderful top rooms have close-up views of the Eiffel Tower. M° École-Militaire. €70–85

Grand Hôtel Lévèque 29 rue Cler tel 01.47.05.49.15, www.hotel-leveque.com. Located smack in the middle of the posh rue Cler market, this is a largish, decent, family-run place. Book a month ahead for the brighter front-facing rooms. M° École-Militaire/La Tour-Maubourg. €70–85

Le Pavillon 54 rue St-Dominique tel 01.45.51.42.87, [email protected]. A tiny former convent set back from the tempting shops of the rue St-Dominique. Rooms are small and very simple, but good value for this area. M° Invalides/La Tour-Maubourg. €70–85

Welcoming hotel in the heart of this upmarket, villagey neighbourhood, which sits in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. The prettily wallpapered rooms are arranged around a bright little courtyard with tables and chairs amid the greenery. M° Invalides/La Tour-Maubourg. €100–125

Attractively chintzy and cottage-like two-star with exposed-stone walls and flagstones recalling its former life as a convent. There's a miniature patio for summer breakfast and drinks, but you pay for the location. M° Invalides/La Tour-Maubourg. €125–150
