Hôtel Bonséjour 11 rue Burq, 18e tel 01.42.54.22.53, fax 01.42.54.25.92. Set in a marvellous location on a quiet untouristy street on the slopes of Montmartre, this hotel is run by friendly and conscientious owners, and the rooms, which are basic, but clean and spacious, are Montmartre's best deal. Ask for the corner rooms 23, 33, 43 or 53, all of which have a balcony. M° Abbesses. €30–40

Hôtel le Bouquet de Montmartre 1 rue Durantin, 18e tel 01.46.06.87.54. The decor is rather overwhelmingly chintzy, but the rooms are comfortable and good value, and the location on the corner of lively place des Abbesses, directly underneath the Butte, is excellent. M° Jules-Joffrin. €55–70

Hôtel Caulaincourt 2 sq Caulaincourt (by 63 rue Caulaincourt), 18e tel 01.46.06.42.99, www.caulaincourt.com. One of the nicest and friendliest of the cheaper hotels. The rooms are fairly well kept, and the more expensive ones are en suite. From the larger room of the brand new youth-hostel section (€23 a night), the lucky backpackers get a magnificent view. M° Lamarck-Caulaincourt. €40–55

Hôtel du Commerce 34 rue des Trois-Frères, 18e tel 01.42.64.81.69. Cheerfully grotty hotel for the hardened traveller only. Arrive in the morning for a room that night. M° Abbesses/Anvers. Under €30.

Ermitage 24 rue Lamarck, 18e tel 01.42.64.79.22. This discreet, elegant hotel is characterfully decorated in deep colours. Only a stone's throw from the Sacré Coeur but it's best to approach via M° Anvers and the funiculaire to avoid the steep climb. M° Lamarck-Caulaincourt/Château-Rouge. €70–85

Hôtel du Puy de Dôme 180 rue Ordener (av St-Ouen end), 18e tel 01.46.27.78.55, fax 01.42.29.13.67. On the north side of Montmartre, close to a big street market and the métro. A pleasant, friendly and well-maintained budget hotel. M° Guy-Môquet. €40–55

Timhotel Montmartre pl Émile-Goudeau, 11 rue Ravignan, 18e tel 01.42.55.74.79, [email protected]. Rooms are modern, comfortable and freshly decorated in a nondescript chain-hotel way. The location, however, is unbeatable – on the beautiful shady square where Picasso had his studio in 1900, with views across the city from the more expensive (€125–150) rooms. M° Abbesses/Blanche. €100–125

Pigalle and South of Pigalle

Langlou/des Croisés 63 rue St-Lazare, 9e tel 01.48.74.78.24, [email protected]. Superbly genteel hotel that's hardly changed in half a century, with a beautiful old lift and unusually large rooms. M° Trinité. €85–100

Perfect Hotel 39 Rue Rodier, 9e tel 01.42.81.18.86, fax 01.42.85.01.38. Popular hotel on a lively street populated with restaurants. Simple, clean rooms and a warm welcome. M° Anvers. €40–55

The Stations and Faubourgs

Chabrol Opéra Hôtel 46 rue de Chabrol, 10e tel 01.45.23.93.10, www.hotelchabrol.com. A reliable, welcoming little hotel within walking distance of the stations. Exposed roof beams add a warm note to the otherwise completely modernized rooms. M° Poissoniére/Gare-de-l'Est. €70–85

Grand Hôtel d'Amiens 88 rue du Faubourg-Poissonnière (nr junction with rue La-Fayette), 10e tel 01.48.78.71.18, fax 01.48.74.89.41. Worn stairs and no frills, but the rooms are clean and reasonably spacious, and the more expensive ones (€40–55) have bathrooms. M° Poissonnière. €30–40

Hôtel Jarry 4 rue de Jarry, 10e tel 01.47.70.70.38, fax 01.42.46.34.45. Simple but welcoming hotel in a lively immigrant quarter. Distinctly fresher than the cheaper Dives in the area. M° Gare-de-l'Est/Château-d'Eau. €30–40

Marclau Hôtel 78 rue du Faubourg Poissonniére tel 01.47.70.73.50, fax 01.44.83.95.89. Efficient budget option situated on a quiet corner at the posher end of the quartier. Some frayed edges, but the rooms are large, clean and good value. M° Poissoniére. €40–55

Nord-Est Hôtel 12 rue des Petits-Hôtels, 10e tel 01.47.70.07.18, [email protected]. A safe option if you need to be close to the station. Rooms are clean and modern, though characterless. M° Poissonnière/Gare-du-Nord/Gare-de-l'Est. €70–85

Run by Nice, helpful owners, this cheapie has acceptable rooms in a busy, colourful and central district near the Porte St-Martin. The non-en-suite rooms (single €17, double €25) have access to showers on a separate floor for a supplement of €3.50. An extra €11 gets you a room with a shower. M° Strasbourg-St-Denis. Under €30.

Hôtel du Savoy 9 rue Jarry, 10e tel 01.47.70.03.72. Basic, shabby no-star in a very down-at-heel area but you'll be hard pushed to find a cheaper room anywhere, and there are other basic options on the same street if this one is full. M° Gare-de-l'Est/Château-d'Eau. Under €30.

Terminus Nord 12 bd de Denain, 10e tel 01.42.80.20.00, fax 01.42.80.63.89. A traditional-style luxury hotel right in front of the Gare du Nord. The restoration was undertaken when the hotel was bought by the Libertel group and bears a few signs of the chain-hotelier, but its aspirations and services are those of a four-star hotel and it's a very comfortable and convenient place to stay. Rooms start at around €170. M° Gare-du-Nord. Over €150.

Batignolles

Hôtel Avenir-Jonquière 23 rue de la Jonquière, 17e tel 01.46.27.83.41, fax 01.46.27.88.08. Clean, friendly establishment offering bargain accommodation. Close to the tempting food stores on av de St-Ouen. M° Guy-Môquet/Brochant. €40–55

Hôtel Eldorado 18 rue des Dames, 17e tel 01.45.22.35.21, www.eldorado.cityvox.com. You can't miss the bright yellow front of this hotel, which sets the tone for the sunny, sometimes idiosyncratic colour scheme within. A funky, trendy and reasonably priced place to stay. M° Rome/Place-de-Clichy. €55–70

Hôtel Savoy 21 rue des Dames, 17e tel 01.42.93.13.47. Typical unmodernized Paris cheapie offering a choice of rooms with shared bathrooms or private showers. M° Place-de-Clichy/Rome. Under €30.
