Accommodation in Paris is often booked up well in advance, particularly in the spring and autumn. It's wise to reserve a place as early as you can, particularly if you fancy staying in one of the more characterful places. You can simply call – all receptionists speak some English – but it's also worth bearing in mind that more and more places offer online booking as well. If you book by phone, many hotels will ask for a credit card number, others for written or faxed confirmation, while a few inexpensive places may even ask for a deposit to be sent in the post. If you're stuck, the main tourist office at Champs-Élysées and the branches at Gare de Lyon and the Eiffel Tower will find you a room: all book accommodation for that day only, and you have to turn up at the office in person (€3–8 commission for a hotel room depending on the number of stars, €1.20 for a hostel). Alternatively, the student travel agency OTU Voyages, at 119 rue St-Martin, opposite the Pompidou Centre, 4e (Mon–Fri 9.30am–6.30pm, Sat 10am–5pm; tel 08.25.00.40.24, www.otu.fr; M° Châtelet-Les Halles) and at 39 av Georges Bernanos, 5e (tel 08.25.00.40.27; M° Port Royal) can find inexpensive rooms for a fee of €12.
