Grand Hôtel St-Michel 19 rue Cujas, 5e tel 01.46.33.33.02, www.grand-hotel-st-michel.com. Extremely pleasant rooms overlooking the Sorbonne and a stone's throw from both the Panthéon and the Luxembourg gardens. Hôtel de l'Angleterre 44 rue Jacob, 6e tel 01.42.60.34.72, [email protected]. Hôtel du Globe 15 rue des Quatre-Vents, 6e tel 01.43.26.35.50, fax 01.46.33.62.69. Extremely welcoming hotel in a tall, narrow, seventeenth-century building decked out in a rather eccentric medieval theme: four-posters, stone walls, roof beams and even a suit of armour. Breakfast (€8) is a more interesting affair than the usual, with fancy viennoiseries. M° Odéon. €55–100

Grand Hôtel des Balcons 3 rue Casimir-Delavigne, 6e tel 01.46.34.78.50, www.balcons.com. An attractive and comfortable hotel with Art Deco touches and modern rooms. L'Hôtel 13 rue des Beaux-Arts, 6e tel 01.44.41.99.00, www.l-hotel.com. Extravagantly kitsch "destination" hotel – Oscar Wilde died here, "fighting a duel" with his wallpaper – with prices climbing above the €300 mark. The twenty eccentrically individual rooms retain their original 1960s designer decor, and there's a small pool underground. M° Mabillon/St-Germain-des-Prés. Over €150.
