Hôtel Gilden-Magenta 35 rue Yves Toudic, 10e tel 01.42.40.17.72, fax 01.42.02.59.66, www.multi-micro.com/hotel.gilden.magenta. A friendly hotel, with fresh, colourful decor; rooms 61 and 62, up in the attic, are the best and have views of the Canal St Martin. Breakfast is served in a pleasant patio area. Ibis Paris La Villette 31–35 Quai de L'Oise, 19e tel 01.40.38.04.04, fax 01.40.38.48.90, www.ibishotel.com. Situated right on the canal facing the Parc de la Villette, this good-value modern chain hotel is a great spot to stay if you want to spend a few days exploring the park or attending concerts at the Cité de la Musique. It's also convenient if you're bringing your own car, as it's easily reached from the boulevard périphérique exiting at the Porte de la Villette, with free parking included. M° Corentin Cariou/Ourcq. €55–70

Mary's Hôtel 15 rue de Malte, 11e tel 01.47.00.81.70, fax 01.47.00.58.06, www.maryshotel.com. Comfortable and clean, if somewhat cramped, hotel on the edge of the Marais, run by courteous people. The cheaper rooms are good value for money, the en-suite rooms less so. M° Oberkampf/République. €40–55

Hôtel Moderne du Temple 3 rue d'Aix, 10e tel 01.42.08.09.04, fax 01.42.41.72.17, hmt.chez.tiscali.fr. A bargain hotel run by Czechs. The forty rooms are simple but clean, some en suite. M° République/Goncourt. €30–40

Hôtel de Nevers 53 rue de Malte, 11e tel 01.47.00.56.18, fax 01.43.57.77.39, www.hoteldenevers.com. Three smoky-grey cats patrol the entrance to this friendly one-star. Rooms are small and vary in standard, but most are well-kept and cheerful. When it's working, a rickety 1930s lift rumbles its way between the floors. An Internet point in the foyer is available for checking email. M° Oberkampf/République. €30–40

Belleville, Ménilmontant and Charonne

Ermitage Hôtel 42bis rue de l'Ermitage, 20e tel 01.46.36.23.44, fax 01.46.36.89.13. A clean and decent cheapie, close to the leafy rue des Pyrénées with its provincial feel. M° Jourdain. Under €30.

Hôtel Pyrénées-Gambetta 12 av du Père-Lachaise, 20e tel 01.47.97.76.57, fax 01.47.97.17.61. On a quiet road and luxurious for this part of town, yet unpretentious and very pleasant. All rooms with cable TV. M° Gambetta. €40–55

Hôtel Rhin et Danube 3 pl Rhin-et-Danube, 19e tel 01.42.45.10.13, fax 01.42.06.88.82, www.gaf.tm.fr. Studio apartments with small kitchenettes geared to the self-catering and located northeast of the city centre, near the entrance to the Parc de la Villette on the airy heights of Belleville. Good value. M° Danube. €55–70

Down to the Faubourg St-Antoine & The 12e

Hôtel de la Porte Dorée 273 av Daumesnil, 12e tel 01.43.07.56.97, fax 01.49.28.08.18. A charming two-star, renovated with great care and taste by an American-French family. Traditional features such as ceiling mouldings, fireplaces and the elegant main staircase have been retained and many of the furnishings in the rooms are antique. Modern touches include Internet point, satellite TV and hairdryers in all the rooms. The Bastille is seven mintues away by metro or a pleasant twenty-minute walk along the Promenade Plantée. M° Porte-Dorée. €55–70

Hôtel des Pyrénées 204 rue du Faubourg-St-Antoine, 11e tel 01.43.72.07.46, fax 01.43.72.98.45. A good-value hotel with thirty comfortable and spacious, if a little old-fashioned, rooms; those on the road are lighter and double-glazed. M° Faidherbe-Chaligny. €55–70

Hôtel Tamaris 14 rue des Maraîchers, 20e tel 01.43.72.85.48 or toll free 0800.20.13.66, fax 01.43.56.81.75, www.hotel-tamaris.fr. An old-fashioned, well-maintained hotel run by Nice people. Extremely good value and understandably popular. Only four metro stops from the Bastille and close to the terminus of bus route #26 from Gare du Nord. M° Porte-de-Vincennes. €30–40

Modern, serviced studio apartments, that sleep from two to six people, and come with fully equipped kitchens – perfectly positioned for food shopping in the nearby place d'Aligre market – plus satellite TV.
