Small, no-frills hotel in a refurbished eighteenth-century mansion sandwiched between the Pompidou, the Marais and bustling rue de Rivoli. Provides all expected amenities and is particularly gay-friendly. M° Hôtel-de-Ville. €85–100

Caron de Beaumarchais 12 rue Vieille-du-Temple tel 01.42.72.34.12, fax 01.42.72.34.63. Named after the eighteenth-century French playwright Beaumarchais, who lived just up the road, this gem of a hotel has only nineteen rooms. Everything in the hotel – down to the original engravings and Louis XVI-style furniture, not to mention the piano-forte in the foyer – evokes the refined tastes of high-society pre-Revolutionary Paris. Rooms overlooking the courtyard are small but cosy, while those on the street are more spacious, some with balcony. Book well in advance. M° Hôtel-de-Ville. €125–150

Hôtel Central Marais 33 rue Vieille-du-Temple, 4e tel 01.48.87.56.08, fax 01.42.77.06.27, www.hotelcentralmarais.com. The only self-proclaimed gay hotel in Paris, with a relaxed bar downstairs. Seven small rooms with shared bathrooms. Also lets an apartment that sleeps four (€100). The entrance is on Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. M° Hôtel-de-Ville. €85–100

Grand Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc 3 rue de Jarente, 4e tel 01.48.87.62.11, fax 01.48.87.37.31, www.hoteljeannedarc.com. An attractive old Marais building, just off place du Marché Sainte-Catherine. The rooms are a decent size, with Nice individual touches, plus cable TV. The triple at the top has good views over the rooftops. Booking essential. M° St-Paul. €55–70

Grand Hôtel du Loiret 8 rue des Mauvais-Garçons, 4e tel 01.48.87.77.00, fax 01.48.04.96.56, [email protected]. A friendly, good-value hotel, recently renovated. The two triples on the top floor have excellent views of the Sacré Coeur. Cheaper rooms have washbasin only, but all have TV and telephone, and there's also an email access point in the lobby. M° Hôtel-de-Ville. €40–55

Grand Hôtel Malher 5 rue Malher, 4e tel 01.42.72.60.92, fax 01.42.72.25.37. Family-run hotel, situated right in the heart of the Marais. Rooms are light and well decorated, with gleaming-white bathrooms. Breakfast is served in a renovated seventeenth-century vaulted wine cellar. M° St-Paul. €100–125

Hôtel de Nice 42bis rue de Rivoli, 4e tel 01.42.78.55.29, fax 01.42.78.36.07. Very pretty rooms – some with french windows and balconies; the rooms on the upper floors have views of the towers of Notre-Dame and the small square below. M° Hôtel-de-Ville. €85–100

Hôtel Pavillon de la Reine 28 pl des Vosges tel 01.40.29.19.19, fax 01.40.29.19.20, www.pavillon-de-la-reine.com. A perfect honeymoon or romantic-weekend hotel in a beautiful ivy-covered mansion secreted away off the place des Vosges. Rooms are sumptuously decorated with rich fabrics, antique furnishings and four-poster beds and come with all the modern comforts of a four-star hotel. Doubles start at €300. M° Bastille. Over €150.

Hôtel St-Louis Marais 1 rue Charles-V, 4e tel 01.48.87.87.04, fax 01.48.87.33.26, www.hotelsaintlouismarais.com. Formerly part of the seventeenth-century Célestins Convent, this comfortable hotel offers tastefully furnished, somewhat small, but cosy rooms. M° Sully-Morland. €100–125

Hôtel du Séjour 36 rue du Grenier-St-Lazare, 3e tel 01.48.87.40.36. A very clean, no-frills establishment run by a nice couple, and only a short walk from the Pompidou Centre. Around half the rooms have showers; the others have access to a shower on the third floor, for which you pay €4. M° Rambuteau/Étienne-Marcel. €40–55

Hôtel du Septième Art 20 rue St-Paul, 4e tel 01.44.54.85.00, fax 01.42.77.69.10, [email protected]. Pleasant, comfortable place decorated with posters and photos from old movies; a similarly themed salon de thé downstairs. The stairs and bathrooms live up to the black-and-white-movie style. Every room is equipped with a safe. M° St-Paul/Sully Morland. €70–85

Hôtel Sévigné 2 rue Malher, 4e tel 01.42.72.76.17, fax 01.42.78.68.26, www.le-sevigne.com. A comfortable, pleasant hotel, just off rue de Rivoli. The rooms are small but well-maintained and double-glazed; the cheapest come with shower and toilet on the landing. M° St-Paul. €55–70

Quartier du Temple

Hôtel du Cantal 7 rue des Vertus, 3e tel 01.42.77.65.52, fax 01.42.77.64.95, hcantal.online.fr. Located near the Picasso Museum on a quiet, pedestrianized street, this small hotel with only fourteen rooms represents extremely good value for the area. The recently renovated rooms are attractively, if simply, decorated, with some period features, like exposed beams. There's also a small family suite on the top floor. Breakfast is available in the café-bar downstairs, as is dinner. Note that there's a midnight curfew. M° Arts-et-Métiers. €55–70

Hôtel du Marais 16 rue de Beauce, 3e tel 01.42.72.30.26, [email protected]. A prewar Paris budget hotel, untouched, with brown spiral stairs, tiled floors, squat loos and an old-fashioned bar on the ground floor. Primitive, certainly, and the beds are very saggy, but clean, quiet and with pleasant service. M° Arts-et-Métiers/Filles-du-Calvaire/Temple. €30–40

Paris France Hôtel 72 rue de Turbigo, 3e tel 01.42.78.00.04, fax 01.42.71.99.43. Near the noisy intersection of rue de Turbigo and rue du Temple, but in an animated quartier off the beaten track. Rooms vary, so it's best to view before committing yourself. M° Temple/République. €70–85

Hôtel Picard 26 rue de Picardie, 3e tel 01.48.87.53.82, fax 01.48.87.02.56, www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75003picard2.htm. A little frayed around the edges, but a clean and comfortable establishment with decent-sized rooms overlooking the Carreau du Temple and in the same block as Paris's best Internet café. Ten percent reduction if you produce your Rough Guide. M° Temple/République. €40–55

The Bastille

Citadines Bastille Marais 37 bd Richard Lenoir, 11e tel 01.53.36.90.00, fax 01.53.36.90.22, www.citadines.com. An apartment-hotel with 108 studios sleeping two and 30 two-roomed apartments for four. Each comes with its own kitchen and bathroom and some have balconies. The excellent food market on Richard Lenoir (Thurs & Sun) is a good source of provisions if you plan on doing some self-catering. Rooms, decorated in attractive contemporary style, come with TV, CD player and Internet point. You also benefit from all the amenities of a three-star hotel, plus parking, laundry services and the option of breakfast. Minimum stay 2 nights. €85–100

Méridional 36 bd Richard-Lenoir, 11e tel 01.48.05.75.00, fax 01.43.57.42.85. A welcoming and attractive three-star on a fairly quiet road, handily located for the Marais and Bastille. Rooms are equipped with minibar, TV and Internet point and have recently been refurbished in light oak and pastel colours. M° Bréguet-Sabin/Bastille. €100–125

Pax Hotel 12 rue de Charonne, 11e tel 01.47.00.40.98, fax 01.42.28.57.81. A reasonable, no-frills establishment well placed for the Bastille's nightlife, but don't count on it living up to its name – quiet it isn't, and there's no double glazing either. M° Ledru-Rollin/Bastille. €40–55
