Doctors and pharmacies

To find a doctor, ask at any pharmacie, local police station, tourist office or your hotel. Alternatively, look under "Médecins" in the Yellow Pages of the phone directory. An average consultation fee should be between €20 and €25. You will be given a Feuille de Soins (statement of treatment) for later insurance claims. Prescriptions should be taken to a pharmacie and must be paid for; the medicines will have little stickers (vignettes) attached to them, which you should remove and stick to your Feuille de Soins, together with the prescription itself.

In serious emergencies you will always be admitted to the nearest hospital (hôpital), either under your own power or by ambulance, which even French citizens must pay for; many people call the fire brigade (pompiers) instead, who are equipped to deal with medical emergencies and are the fastest and most reliable emergency service. For a list of phone numbers to call in a medical emergency, consult the "Directory".

Pharmacies, signalled by an illuminated green cross, can give advice on minor complaints and prescribe appropriate medicines. They're also equipped to provide first-aid help on request (for a fee). They keep normal shop hours (roughly 9am–7pm), and a number stay open all night: details of the nearest one open are posted in all pharmacies. Pharmacies open at night include Dérhy/Pharmacie des Champs-Élysées, 84 av des Champs-Élysées, 8e tel 01.45.62.02.41; 24hr; M° George-V); Pharmacie Européenne, 6 place de Clichy, 9e (tel 01.48.74.65.18; 24hr; M° Place-de-Clichy); Pharmacie des Halles, 10 bd Sébastopol, 4e (tel 01.42.72.03.23; Mon–Sat 9am–midnight, Sun noon–midnight; M° Châtelet); Pharmacie Matignon, 2 rue Jean-Mermoz, 8e (tel 01.43.59.86.55; daily 8.30am–2am; M° Franklin-D.Roosevelt); Pharmacie Internationale de Paris, 5 pl Pigalle, 9e (tel 01.48.78.38.12; daily to 1am; M° Pigalle); Grande Pharmacie de la Nation, 13 place de la Nation, 11e (tel 01.43.73.24.03; Mon noon–midnight, Tues–Sat 8am–midnight, Sun 8pm–midnight; M° Nation).
