Regard du Cygne 210 rue de Belleville, 20^e tel 01.43.58.55.93. Innovative and exciting new work. One of the centre's best-known events is its series of Spectacles Sauvages, in which virtually anyone can perform a ten-minute piece to the public. M° Place-des-Fêtes.

Théâtre de la Bastille 76 rue de la Roquette, 11^e tel 01.43.57.42.14. As well as more traditional theatre, there are also dance and mime performances. M° Bastille.

Théâtre des Champs-Élysées 15 av Montaigne, 8^e tel 01.49.52.50.50, www.theatrechampselysees.fr. This prestigious venue, where Stravinsky's premiere of the Rite of Spring caused a riot in 1913, tries to outdo the Opéra with even grander and more expensive ballet productions. M° Alma-Marceau.

Théâtre de la Cité Internationale 21 bd Jourdan, 14 tel 01.43.13.50.50, www.theatredelacite.ciup.fr. An exciting dance venue that hosts the Presqu'ils de la Danse contemporary dance festival in March and performances from the Festival d'Automne later in the year. RER Cité Universitaire.

Théâtre Musical de Paris pl du Châtelet, 4^e tel 01.40.28.28.40, www.chatelet-theatre.com. It was here, in 1910, that Diaghilev put on the first season of Russian ballet, assisted by Cocteau. Though mainly used for classical concerts and opera, it also hosts top-notch visiting ballet companies like the Mariinsky. M° Châtelet.

Karine Saporta's work is regularly featured, as is Maguy Marin, Carolyn Carlson and Pina Bausch, together with modern theatre classics, comedy and concerts. M° Châtelet.
