Adjustable concert hall with seating for 800–1200 listeners depending on the programme, which can cover anything from traditional Korean music to the contemporary sounds of the Ensemble InterContemporain. Performances also in the museum amphitheatre with the occasional airing of instruments from the museum. Ticket prices range from €6.50 to €25. M° Jaurès.

Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris 209 av Jean Jaurès, 19e tel 01.40.40.46.46, www.cnsmdp.fr. Debates, master-classes and free performances from the conservatoire's students. M° Porte-de-Pantin.

IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) 1 pl Igor Stravinsky, 4e tel 01.44.78.48.16, www.ircam.fr. IRCAM, the experimental music laboratory set up by Pierre Boulez, has begun opening its doors for regular concerts and also performs in the main hall of the nearby Pompidou Centre. Ticket prices vary. M° Hôtel-de-Ville.

Maison de Radio France 116 av du Président-Kennedy, 16e tel 01.56.40.15.16, radio-france.fr. Radio station France Musique programmes an excellent range of classical music, operas, jazz and world music and sometimes puts on free concerts – just turn up half an hour in advance to claim your carton d'invitation. Tickets €7.50–55. M° Passy.

Salle Gaveau 45 rue de la Boétie, 8e tel 01.49.53.05.07. This atmospheric concert hall has recently been renovated and can now host full orchestral concerts as well as chamber music. Ticket prices from €12–30. M° Saint-Augustin.

Salle Pleyel 252 rue du Faubourg-St-Honoré, 8e tel 01.45.61.53.00, www.salle-pleyel.fr. Closed for renovation until spring 2004. The Orchestre de Paris, the city's top orchestra, performs here most frequently along with visiting international performers. Ticket prices €14–84. M° Concorde.

Théâtre des Champs-Élysées 15 av Montaigne, 8e tel 01.49.52.50.50, www.theatrechampselysees.fr. Two-thousand-seat capacity in this historic theatre built in 1913. Home to the Orchestre National de France under Kurt Masur and the Orchestre Lamoureux, but also hosts international superstar conductors, ballet troupes and operas. Ticket prices €5–110. M° Alma-Marceau.

Theatre Mogador 25 rue Mogador, 9e tel 01.453.32.32.00, www.mogador.net. This old music hall is currently enjoying a new lease of life as a serious venue for classical music while the Salle Pleyel (see above) undergoes renovation. Ticket prices vary. M° Lazare.

Théâtre Musical de Paris Théâtre du Châtelet, 1 pl du Châtelet, 1er tel 01.40.28.28.00, www.chatelet-theatre.com. Puts on operas, ballets, concerts and solo recitals. Ticket prices range from €11 to €106. M° Châtelet.
