France for visitors

Rollercoasters
France > Paris > Disneyland > Rollercoasters

Each of the park's areas, apart from the child-focused Fantasyland, centres on its rollercoaster. The runaway train on Frontierland's Big Thunder Mountain and the mine-carts of Adventureland's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril: Backwards! are fast and exciting, but the emphasis is on thrills rather than sheer terror – you can tell that things aren't going to be too bad because you're kept in your seat by a bar, rather than being fully strapped in. Space Mountain, in Discoveryland, and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, over in the Walt Disney Studios section, are a different matter altogether. Their upside-down loops, corkscrews and terrifying acceleration require a lock-in padded brace to keep you in place, and you'll need a strong constitution to really enjoy it.

All four rides have different height restrictions, and as you queue for the latter two you'll be bombarded with warnings to discourage pregnant women or people with neck or back problems. You can avoid queues on all of them by using the Fastpass scheme, and arriving early can also be a good strategy but be warned: the experience can be so intense that the park's gentler rides may seem disappointing. Children, in particular, may want to return again and again.

When you emerge from the exit gates, video screens show close-up images of terrified faces captured moments before. While it's fun to hang around until you spot your own twisted visage, buying a photographic copy is fairly expensive and the quality is poor.
