From the gare SNCF (trains roughly every two hours from Gare du Montparnasse; 1hr), avenue J-de-Beauce leads straight up to place Châtelet. Diagonally opposite is rue Ste-Même, which leads to place Jean-Moulin; turn left at place Jean-Moulin and you'll find the cathedral and the tourist office (April-Sept Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 9.30am-5.30pm; Oct-March Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 10am-1pm & 2.30-4.30pm; t02.37.18.26.26). They can supply free maps and help with accommodation. Cloître-Notre-Dame, along the south side of the cathedral, has plenty of eating places, the nicest one being Café Serpente, at no. 2.
