L'Aiglon 5 rue Stanislas, near the square tel 03.83.32.21.43. An interesting and well-prepared meal is around €16–18, including wine and coffee. For more sophisticated traditional and local cuisine, with dishes like choucroute, tourte Lorraine, baeckeoffe, poule-au-pot, there's the menu terroir at €15.

A Casa Corsa 19 rue Saint-Julien tel 03.83.37.43.61. Corsican specialities such as liver sausage and tripe with herbs – delicious Mediterranean flavours served in a cool setting. Lunch menu at €13, dinner €19 and à la carte €20–25. Closed Sat lunch and Sun.

Chez Bagot 45 Grande-Rue tel 03.83.37.42.43. Fresh fish dishes cooked to Breton recipes served up in an appropriately decorated restaurant. Menus from €12.50. Closed Mon & Tues lunch.

L'Excelsior 50 rue Henri-Poincaré, cnr rue Mazagran in front of the train station tel 03.83.35.24.57. A fin-de-siècle Art Nouveau brasserie, frequented by everyone who aspires to be anyone in Nancy. Now part of the Flo brasserie chain but managing to retain its superb interior and good food (menus at €20 and €27). It's also the best daytime stop for coffee.

Le Faitout 7 rue Gustave-Simon tel 03.83.35.36.52. Serves delicious, beautifully presented organic food in a cosy setting. There's a vegetarian set meal for €13; otherwise there are menus at €16, €20 and €23.

Les Pissenlits 25 rue des Ponts tel 03.83.37.43.97. Real old-fashioned bistro fare on a menu at €15, in an attractive atmosphere. Recently awarded the Bib Gourmand by Michelin for well-prepared meals at moderate prices. Closed Sun & Mon.

La Toque Blanche 1 rue Mgr-Trouillet, just off place St-Epvre tel 03.83.30.17.20. One of the finest gourmet restaurants in Nancy. The €21 menu is a bargain; à la carte costs €60 and more. Closed Sun eve & Mon.
