Café de l'Abreuvoir 8 rue de l'Abreuvoir, near place St-Louis. Cosy, noisy and fashionable place, with a very French atmosphere and simple, good wine-bar fare (andouillette and quiche Lorraine at around €8 per plat).

La Fleur de Lys 5 rue des Piques tel 03.87.36.64.51. Charming restaurant between the cathedral and the river offering traditional French food, with excellent service. Menus change regularly and cost from €18.50. Closed Sat lunch & Sun.

Du Pont-St-Marcel 1 rue du Pont-St-Marcel, Île Chambière tel 03.87.30.12.29. A seventeenth-century establishment on the island, distinctive for its excellent regional cuisine and staff dressed in regional costume. Menus at €17 and €26, including eel and suckling-pig, and wines from the French Moselle. Closed Sun eve & Mon.

Le Relais des Tanneurs 2bis rue des Tanneurs, off the end of rue En-Fournirue tel 03.87.75.49.09. Unpretentious restaurant, serving traditional French dishes. Lots of specialities, including mussels, scallops and ris de veau; menus €10–25, carte around €18.50, plats du jour €6.50–10 Closed Sun & Aug 1–15.

Des Roches 29 rue des Roches tel 03.87.74.06.51. Wonderfully located by the river, this old-fashioned inn serves up traditional fare (plats from €13), including fish selected from a tank. Closed Sun & Mon eves.

À la Ville de Lyon 7 rue Piques tel 03.87.36.07.01. Located just below the cathedral, this restaurant specializes in the best traditional cooking. The atmosphere is quite formal and jeans are frowned upon. From €30. Closed Mon, Sun eve & Aug.
