Arrival, information and accommodation

The huge granite gare SNCF stands opposite the post office at the end of rue Gambetta. The gare routière is east of the train station and on the other side of the railway tracks on avenue de l'Amphithéâtre. The tourist office (July & Aug Mon–Sat 9am–9pm, Sun 10am–1pm & 3–5pm; Sept–June Mon–Sat 9am–7pm, Sun 10am–1pm & 3–5pm; tel 03.87.55.53.76, fax 03.87.36.59.43) is located by the side of the Hôtel de Ville on place d'Armes in the old town. Almost any bus from the station will take you there.

There's a good range of hotels and budget accommodation in Metz, including an HI hostel, foyer (the tourist office has information about other foyers available in summer) and campsite, as well as the odd ritzy establishment. The several reasonable hotels in front of the train station tend to fill up fast in season.
