As you might expect from a large fishing port, Boulogne is a good spot to eat fresh fish and seafood. With dozens of possibilities for eating around place Dalton and the ville haute bear in mind the – dwindling – day-tripper trade and be selective. If you're just after a drink, there is a concentration of bars in place Godefroy de Bouillon, opposite the Hôtel de Ville, and a raft of lively bars in place Dalton, with Au Bureau and the Welsh Pub the most popular.

Bar Hamiot 1 rue Faidherbe. Under the hotel of the same name, this brasserie remains as popular as ever with locals and tourists alike, offering a large range of dishes from €7 omelettes and €10–16 fish dishes to €14–19 menus.

Estaminet du Château 2 rue du Château, off rue de Lille by the Basilica tel 03.21.91.49.66. Serving simple food in a prettily decorated old stone building opposite Notre-Dame in the ville haute, this restaurant has an excellent menu from €11 and inexpensive à la carte dishes (quarter roast chicken €6). Closed Thurs.

L'Étoile de Marrakech 228 rue Nationale. A friendly Moroccan restaurant where the chef comes out to shake your hand; olives, bread and spicy sausage come as complimentary starters, and the servings of couscous (from €11) are incredibly generous. Closed Wed.

La Matelote 80 bd Ste-Beuve tel 03.21.30.17.97. The smartest restaurant in town, located opposite Nausicaá, featuring a dégustation menu at €60. If you'd rather not spend that much, you could go for the €30 menu or à la carte fish from €19. Loving care is taken over the food and service, but it's rather snooty. Closed Sun eve.

Aux Pêcheurs d'Etaples 31 Grande-Rue. The freshest fish and seafood in a smart restaurant hidden behind the poissonnerie front. Menus at €15 upwards.

Sucré Salé 13 rue Monsigny. Smart, modern place combining the roles of restaurant, café, bar, salon de thé and patisserie; its speciality is gourmet salads, making it a good choice for vegetarians. Light, airy and sparse, with a wonderful range of teas and coffees. Mon–Sat 8am–8pm, Sun takeaway only.
