Once St-Lô was taken in the Battle of Normandy, the armies speedily moved on southwestwards for their next confrontation. The Vire Valley, trailing south from St-Lô, saw little action and its towns and villages seem to have been rarely touched by any historic or cultural mainstream. The motivation in coming to this landscape of rolling hills and occasional gorges is essentially to consume the region's cider, its Calvados (much of it bootleg), its fruit pastries, and its sausages made from pigs' intestines.
