France for visitors

Upstream from Rouen
France > Normandy > Seine Maritime > Upstream from Rouen

Upstream from Rouen towards Paris, high cliffs on the north bank of the Seine imitate the coast, looking down on waves of green and scattered river islands. By the time you reach Les Andelys, 25km southeast of Rouen, you're within 100km of the capital, meaning that accommodation and eating prices tend to be geared towards affluent weekend and day-trippers. Large country estates abound in this agreeable countryside, and public transport is minimal. However, infrequent buses run from Rouen to Les Andelys, and trains from Rouen call at Vernon, just across the river from one of Normandy's most visited tourist attractions, the village of Giverny.
