As you would expect in a conurbation of 400,000, there's always plenty going on in Rouen, from classical concerts in churches to alternative events in community and commercial centres. The city holds several theatres, which mainly work to winter seasons. The most highbrow and big-spectacle is the Théâtre des Arts, 7 rue de Dr-Rambert (tel 02.35.71.41.36), which puts on opera, ballet and concerts. The more adventurous repertory company of the Théâtre des Deux Rives (tel 02.35.70.22.82), based opposite the Antiquités museum at the top end of rue Louis-Ricard, presents work by playwrights such as Beaumarchais, Shakespeare, Beckett and Gorky.Major concerts often take place in the Théâtre Duchamp-Villon in the St-Sever complex (tel 02.32.18.28.10). Also south of the river, but a long way further out, are the Théâtre Charles Dullin, allée des Arcades, Grand Quévilly (tel 02.35.69.51.18), and the Théâtre Maxime-Gorki, rue François-Mitterrand, Petit Quévilly (tel 02.35.03.29.78), which specializes in contemporary and traditional music from around Europe. There are two multi-screen cinemas just north of the river, and another in the St-Sever complex.
