Pretty ST-VAAST-LA-HOUGUE, 11km south of Barfleur, is more of a resort, with lots of tiny Channel-crossing yachts moored in the bay where Edward III landed on his way to Crécy and a string of fortifications from Vauban's time. The Hôtel de France et des Fuchsias, just back from the sea at 18 rue du Maréchal-Foch (tel 02.33.54.42.26, www.france-fuchsias.com; under €85; closed JanFeb, plus Mon SeptJune, & Sun pm & Tues lunch NovDec & March), with its splendid gardens and excellent restaurant, is an ideal stopover for ferry passengers in fact both it and the annexe at the end of the garden are packed throughout the season with British visitors.
