Caen's small, modern airport, just outside Carpiquet 7km west (tel 02.31.71.20.10), is served by €1 buses connecting with all services, taking 25 minutes to run to and from the Tour-le-Roi stop in place Courtonne. Avis (tel 02.31.84.73.80), National (tel 02.31.52.22.22) and Rent A Car (tel 02.31.84.10.10) provide car rental both in the terminal and in town.The gare SNCF (tel 02.31.83.50.50) is a rather dull kilometre's walk south of the town centre across the river, with the gare routière alongside. An extensive network of local buses and trams is run by TWISTO (tel 02.31.15.55.55, www.twisto.fr), which has ticket and information centres at 15 rue de Geôles (just north of the tourist office), and on boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc. The main tram route, inaugurated in 2002, connects the southern and northern suburbs, running through the heart of the city from the gare SNCF up Avenue de 6-Juin to the university and beyond.
