Bar de la Marine 15 quai Rive Neuve, 1er. A favourite bar for Vieux Port lounging and the inspiration for Pagnol's celebrated Marseille trilogy of Marius (1929), Fanny (1931) and César (1936). Open 7–2am. Closed Sun.

Le Cadratin 17 rue St-Saëns, 1er. Friendly and cheap bar with 1960s music playing on the jukebox and a great mix of people, both foreign and local. Daily till 2am.

Café Parisien 1 place Sadi-Carnot, 2e. Very beautiful old-fashioned café, where people play cards and chess. Occasional painting exhibitions. Mon–Wed 4.30am–11pm; Thurs–Sat 4.30–1am.

Le MP Bar 10 rue Beauvau, 1er. Gay and lesbian bar near the Opera. Daily 5.30pm–dawn.

Le Petit Nice 26 place Jean-Jaurès, 1er. Cosy, local bar overlooking the market. Mon–Sat 6.15–1.15am.

Le Red Lion 231 av Pierre Mendès-France, 8e. Popular spot when the weather's Nice, along Plage Borély. Daily till 4am.

La Shambhala 40 rue des 3 freres Barthelemy, 6e. Berber teahouse with tea, cushions and relaxed, shoeless atmosphere. Tues–Sat 5pm–1.30am; Sun 3–8pm.
