The gare SNCF is a few minutes' walk to the south of place Vival across the river at the end of rue de la Gare and avenue des Poilus. SNCF buses leave from the train station, and others from the gare routière on avenue Maréchal-Joffre, a few minutes' walk west of place Vival. You'll find the tourist office in the Hôtel de la Monnaie on place Vival (May & June Mon–Sat 10am–noon & 2.30–6pm, Sun 10am–1pm; July to mid-Sept daily 10am–7.30pm; mid-Sept to April Mon–Sat 10am–noon & 2.30–6pm; tel 05.65.34.06.25, www.quercy-tourisme.com/figeac).

The nicest place to stay is the Des Bains, 1 rue du Griffoul (tel 05.65.34.10.89, www.hoteldesbains.fr; €30–40; closed mid-Dec to mid-Jan), in a lovely riverside location just across from the old town. One block further back, the Hostellerie de l'Europe at 51 allées Victor-Hugo (tel 05.65.34.10.16, fax 05.65.50.04.57; €30–40; closed mid-Jan to mid-Feb), is better than it looks from the outside, with a 1930s lounge and excellent regional menus for €13–34 (restaurant closed Sat & Sun Oct–April). If you'd rather be more central, the Champollion, on place Champollion (tel 05.65.34.04.37, fax 05.65.34.61.69; €40–55), offers a few functional but clean rooms above a popular café. The tourist office can recommend chambres d'hôte, and there's a well-equipped campsite, Les Rives du Célé (tel 05.65.34.59.00, fax 05.65.34.83.83; closed Oct–March), by the river just east of town, with a restaurant, shop and swimming pool, by the sports ground, where you can also rent canoes.

For eating somewhere other than a hotel restaurant, the Puce à l'Oreille, 5 rue St-Thomas, behind place Carnot, offers some rich Quercy dishes in menus that range from €12.20 to €31.30 (tel 05.65.34.33.08; closed Sun eve & Mon out of season). For a lighter meal, try the crêperie La Chandeleur (from around €7; closed Tues eve & Wed) in rue Boutaric, off place Champollion.
