Saumur spreads along both banks of the Loire and over the small Île d'Offard in the middle of the river too. Arriving at the gare SNCF, you'll find yourself on the north bank: turn right onto avenue David-d'Angers and either take bus #A to the centre or cross the bridge to the island on foot. From the island the old Pont Cessart leads across to the main part of the town on the south bank, where you'll find the gare routière, a couple of blocks west of the bridge on place St-Nicolas, and the tourist office, next to the bridge on place de la Bilange (mid-May to mid-Oct MonSat 9.15am7pm, Sun 10.30am12.30pm & 2.305.30pm; mid-Oct to mid-May MonSat 9.15am12.30pm & 26pm, Sun 10amnoon; tel 02.41.40.20.60, www.saumur-tourisme.com). The old quarter, around St-Pierre and the castle, lies immediately behind the Hôtel de Ville, on the riverbank 100m east of the bridge.Accommodation in Saumur is mostly upmarket and overpriced, but there are a number of very attractive hotels.
