Drinking and nightlife

Late-opening bars congregate around rue St-Laud: Bar du Centre, below Hôtel Centre is full of young Angevins, and there's a cluster of popular Irish-type places at the bottom end of the road, around Place Romain. Just beyond the square, Safari, 23 rue du Mail, is a big, trendy club-bar, while two smaller, more laid-back places can be found a short way down towards the river, on rue de la Parcheminerie: Au Jacare, at 46bis, plays electro and jazz; while two doors down Ti Bazar does good snacks (oysters in winter) earlier on, and gets loud and busy towards midnight. Le V.I.P. Café, 5 rue Montaubon (closed Sun), and Le Boléro, 38 rue St-Laud (closed Sun & Mon), can provide a decent night's dancing, with a friendly, mixed crowd. For something more esoteric, check out the gigs, games and debates at Le Carpe Diem, a "café-philosophe" at 15 rue St-Maurille (tel 02.41.87.50.47; closed Sun). Chabada, 56 bd du Doyenné (take bus #5) puts on live music; to find out about gigs, go to the FNAC record store on rue Lenepveu or check online at www.lechabada.com.
