France for visitors

Around Limoges

There's a clutch of villages within a day's reach of Limoges. A route linking places of interest on the south bank of the Vienne, like the châteaux of Rochechouart, Châlus and Nexon are detailed in the Route Richard-Coeur-de-Lion leaflet (available at local tourist offices), so called because of its associations with the English king. The route also takes you near the Roman baths at Chassenon and Solignac's abbey church, close by which the Château de Châlucet is now reduced to atmospheric ruins. North of the Vienne, the charred walls of Oradour-sur-Glane stand testimony to a World War II massacre, while east of Limoges, beyond the attractive market town of St-Léonard-de-Noblat, the master weavers of Aubusson have been producing tapestries for more than six hundred years.

Visiting all these places really requires a car, but some at least are accessible by a combination of public transport, walking and patient hitching.
