With its own sunny, cosmopolitan charms, Toulouse is a very accessible kick-off point for any destination in the southwest of France. Of the immediately surrounding places, Albi is the number-one priority, with its highly original cathedral and comprehensive collection of Toulouse-Lautrec paintings. Once you've made it that far, it's worth the extra hop to the well-preserved medieval town of Cordes.
