There are plenty of lively and inexpensive restaurants, cafés and bars by the Doubs near place Battant, particularly along the little streets running parallel to the river. Brasserie du Commerce, 31 rue des Granges, has rather grand decor and ambience, and Brasserie du Palais Granvelle, in a lovely shady park next door to the Palais Granvelle, is the best place for breakfast and coffee. For a substantial meal try the century-old Restaurant au Petit Polonais, 81 rue des Granges (tel 03.81.81.23.67; closed Sat eve & Sun; menus from €10), which serves regional food; or Le Poker d'As, 14 square St-Amour (tel 03.81.81.42.49; closed Sun eve & Mon; menus from €20), a touch old-fashioned but one hundred percent reliable. For lunch, there's the superb Le Café-Café, 5bis rue Luc Breton (tel 03.81.81.15.24; MonSat lunch only; plats from €9); or the trendy La Femme du Boulanger, 6 rue Morand (tel 03.81.82.86.93; MonSat 7.30am8pm, Sun 9am7pm) where ultra-fresh salads cost around €9.The two biggest cultural events of the year in Besançon are Jazz en Franche-Comté, which takes place in June and July, and an international young conductors' competition in the first two weeks of September.
