The département of Périgord Pourpre takes its name from the wine-growing region concentrated in its southwest corner, most famous for the sweet white wines produced around Monbazillac. The only town of any size is Bergerac, which makes a good base for visiting the Roman remains at Montcaret and the nearby Château de Montaigne, home of the famous sixteenth-century philosopher. Pages in section ‘Perigord Pourpre’: Bergerac, Ste-Foy-la-Grande and Montcaret.
