France for visitors

Practicalities
France > Corsica > Golfe de Valinco > Propriano (Pruprià) > Practicalities

Ferries from the mainland and Sardinia dock in the Port de Commerce, ten minutes' walk from where the buses stop at the top of rue du Général-de-Gaulle, the town's main street. The SNCM office is on quai Commandant-L'Herminier (tel 04.95.76.04.36), while the tourist office is down in the harbour master's office in the marina (July & Aug daily 8am–8pm; June & Sept Mon–Sat 9am–noon & 3–7pm; Oct–May Mon–Fri 9am–noon & 2–6pm; tel 04.95.76.01.49).

There's a reasonable choice of hotels in the centre of town, including the high-tech Loft Hôtel, 3 rue Camille-Pietri (tel 04.95.76.17.48, fax 04.95.76.22.04; €40–55), directly behind the port; and the Bellevue on avenue Napoléon (tel 04.95.76.01.86, fax 04.95.76.38.94; €55–70), overlooking the marina and with the cheapest central rooms. If you have a car, two other places worth trying are the Arcu di Sole, 3km northeast on the route de Baracci (tel 04.95.76.05.10, fax 04.95.76.13.36; €70–85), which has a pool and gourmet restaurant, or the more modest Ferme Équestre Baracci (tel & fax 04.95.76.19.48; €55–70), an excellent little gîte d'étape and riding centre just down the road from the Arcu di Sole, with half-a-dozen twin-bedded doubles (with or without toilets) and a dining room offering good-value evening meals (€14; order in advance by 5pm).

Campers are well provided for, although the best sites are well out of town: for the best facilities go to Camping Colomba (tel 04.95.76.06.42), 3km north along route de Baracci, which has a swimming pool. At Olmeta plage, the most appealing site is U Libecciu (tel 04.95.74.01.28), the first place on the beach coming from Propriano, or you could try Chez Antoine (tel 04.95.76.06.06) in Marina d'Olmeto, north of the beach.

Cafés and restaurants are concentrated along the marina's avenue Napoléon, where Resto Nicoli is just about the cheapest place to eat, with excellent omelettes and Italian specialities. For fresh seafood, though, you can't beat L'Hippocampe (tel 04.95.76.11.01), tucked away behind the port on rue Pandolphi, which serves a superb-value €22 menu on a pavement terrace.
