Competition between hotels is more cut-throat in Porto than any other resort on the island. During slack periods towards the beginning and end of the season, most places engage in a full-on price war, pasting up cheaper tariffs than their neighbours all of which is great for punters. This three-star is the smartest of the hotels overlooking the marina, with great views from its comfortable rooms and terraces of Capo d'Orto. A large, old-fashioned place with very friendly service and a congenial terrace restaurant. Rooms at the back have the best views. April to mid-Oct. €4055 Le Colombo At the top of the village opposite the turning for Ota tel 04.95.26.10.14, www.porto-tourisme.com/colombo. An informal, sixteen-room hotel overlooking the valley, imaginatively decorated in sea-blue colours with driftwood and flotsam sculpture. €85100 Le Golfe At the base of the rock in the marina tel 04.95.26.13.33. Small, cosy and unpretentious; every room has a balcony with a sea view. Among the cheapest at this end of the village. A perennially popular, recently renovated budget hotel; rooms are basic, but comfortable enough, and they give good off-season discounts.
