France for visitors

Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises
France > North > Champagne and the Ardennes > Plateau de Langres > Colombey

Twenty-seven kilometres northwest of Chaumont, on the N19 to Troyes, is COLOMBEY-LES-DEUX ÉGLISES, the village where Gaullist leaders come to pay homage at the grave of General de Gaulle. De Gaulle's family home, "La Boisserie", is open to the public (Feb–Nov daily except Tues 10am–noon & 2–5.30pm; €3), but the most impressive memorial is the pink granite Cross of Lorraine, symbol of the French Resistance movement, standing over 40m high on a hill just west of the village, signposted off the N19.

The best place to stay here is Les Dhuits, which has a restaurant, on the main road (tel 03.25.01.50.10, fax 03.25.01.56.22; €40–55; menu around €16). The restaurant at the Auberge de la Montagne (tel 03.25.01.51.69) is superior, however, with unusual dishes like turbot in a vanilla sauce.

Alternate spellings:: France, Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises, Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises, Colombey-Les-Deux-Eglises
