Twenty-seven kilometres northwest of Chaumont, on the N19 to Troyes, is COLOMBEY-LES-DEUX ÉGLISES, the village where Gaullist leaders come to pay homage at the grave of General de Gaulle. De Gaulle's family home, "La Boisserie", is open to the public (FebNov daily except Tues 10amnoon & 25.30pm; €3), but the most impressive memorial is the pink granite Cross of Lorraine, symbol of the French Resistance movement, standing over 40m high on a hill just west of the village, signposted off the N19.The best place to stay here is Les Dhuits, which has a restaurant, on the main road (tel 03.25.01.50.10, fax 03.25.01.56.22; €4055; menu around €16). The restaurant at the Auberge de la Montagne (tel 03.25.01.51.69) is superior, however, with unusual dishes like turbot in a vanilla sauce. Alternate spellings:: France, Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises, Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises, Colombey-Les-Deux-Eglises
