Saint Malo
St-Malo boasts over a hundred hotels, including the seaside boarding houses just off the beach, along with several campsites and a hostel – in high season it needs every one of them. If you plan to stay the night before catching a summer ferry, it's best to make a reservation well in advance.

You pay a premium to stay within the city walls, since that's where any nightlife takes place, and it's a fair walk in through the docks from the surrounding suburbs. Unfortunately, the intra-muros hotels tend to take advantage of high summer demand by insisting that you eat in their own restaurants. Cheaper rates can be found by the gare SNCF, or in suburban Paramé, but it's hardly worth being away from the citadelle for the sake of saving a few euros. The hostel is notoriously busy, while the four municipal campsites also tend to be full in July and August.
