France for visitors

Eating and drinking
France > Southwest > La Rochelle > La Rochelle > Eating and drinking

For eating, try the rue du Port/rue St-Sauveur area just off the waterfront, or the attractive rue St-Jean-du-Pérot, which has everything from crêperies and pizzerias to expensive gourmet restaurants and several ethnic eateries including Indian and Chinese places. Particularly worth seeking out are the town's many excellent fish restaurants. Ernest Le Glacier, 15 rue du Port, and Olivier Glacier, 21 rue St Jean du Pérot, both serve excellent ice cream well into the evening.

Popular daytime bars to hang out at in the town include the dark and down-to-earth wine bar Cave de la Guignette at 8 rue St-Nicolas, the numerous brasseries round the old harbour and the Lou-Foc, next to the tourist office in quartier du Gabut. Corrigans, 20 rue des Cloutiers, near the market, serves pub grub and has an affable English-speaking owner, Barry – it also has also live music on Thursday nights.
